Common analgesics, whether aspirin, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen, have terrible effects on the liver, heart, mood, and immune system. For example, acetaminophen was recently found to affect serotonin levels and suppress emotion. It destroys glutathione production in the liver and is the number one cause of acute liver failure . In addition to its blood thinning effects, constant aspirin use can cause bleeding in the intestinal tract and the brain and can make you more vulnerable to the shingles virus. And ibuprofen slows kidney function, doubles and triples your risk of heart attack and stroke, and causes excruciating “rebound” headaches. You may be shocked to learn that 16,500 people die every year from the adverse effects of ibuprofen. Death is an unacceptable side effect for a headache.

Acetaminophen was involved in the most accidental poisonings among infants younger than 6 months.

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is an antidote for acetaminophen toxicity.

The Nutrients That Stop Headaches

By Terry Lemerond

Curcumin : To me, curcumin is the king of botanical medicines. This compound from turmeric has been used in India for thousands of years and is well-known for its strong anti-inflammatory power. Curcumin stops pain throughout the body and treats the symptoms of depression. It is currently being analyzed for its effects on Alzheimer’s disease, and it may possibly be the most important herbal you can get for neurological health. Because of its ability to reduce inflammation, I think it is a must for anyone who deals with any type of headache.
The traditional diet in India includes generous amounts of turmeric in all meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner. People grow up eating it all the time, so the cumulative effect of curcumin in their systems is well established. This may explain the vast differences in rates of neurological diseases when you compare India to the United States.
Along with the frequency of curcumin intake is the fact that it is being eaten with the natural oils from turmeric. This source of fat not only aids in the absorption of curcumin, but provides a number of other health benefits as well.
This is why I recommend curcumin that uses turmeric oils for better absorption—up to 10 times that of plain extracts—and has better blood retention time. The curcumin gets to where it is needed most and sticks around to help stop headache pain. The side effects of curcumin? Stronger DNA, fewer aches and pains overall, and very likely a better state of mind.

Boswellia: If you suffer from cluster headaches, boswellia is an herb you want in your corner. Not only does it fight inflammation differently from many other botanicals—inhibiting 5-LOX where others typically fight COX-2—but it has been shown to reduce the frequency and intensity of headache pain in individuals with chronic cluster headaches.
Not every boswellia is the same. Unstandardized boswellia, for example, provides very little of one of the most important pain-fighting compounds. I believe boswellia is most effective when it is standardized to its primary anti-inflammatory compound, AKBA, (acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid), and beta-boswellic acid, a pro-inflammatory compound (the last thing you need when fighting headaches!), is screened out.

DLPA: Also known as d,l-phenylalanine, this amino acid contains two forms of phenylalanine. The “l” form improves mood-elevating chemicals in the brain, such as dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine. The “d” form of phenylalanine appears to block a nervous system enzyme (enzyme carboxypeptidase A) that intensifies pain signals and inhibits another enzyme (enkephalinase) that breaks down enkephalins, one of the brain’s natural pain-killing and “feel good” chemicals—in the same family as endorphins.

DLPA ultimately converts to tyrosine, which is a precursor to helpful neurotransmitters like dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine; melanin, a healthy pigment in the skin; and thyroid hormone. Many studies have examined using DLPA for headaches with great results.

Magnesium: This premier mineral for a sound mind and body has a long history in migraine research. That’s because it has been estimated that about half of all migraine sufferers are magnesium deficient. With this in mind, studies have shown that pretreatment with magnesium reduced migraines in children and stopped migraines in adults. Other work shows that magnesium deficiencies are potentially at the root of a number of neurological and mood disorders, including depression and anxiety, which have been treated conventionally with some of the same drugs used for migraines.

There are many forms of magnesium, but not all of them are absorbed well, and some cause gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea. The best, I think, is magnesium bound (or chelated) to the amino acid glycine. This both improves its absorption and minimizes the chance for negative side effects.

Vitamin B6: Vitamin B6 has been shown to reduce the severity and duration of headaches in people who are genetically susceptible to migraines. That’s because it helps lower levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that is associated with damage to blood vessel walls and greater risk of stroke. Homocysteine is commonly found in individuals who suffer from migraines with auras.

I recommend vitamin B6 in its pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P-5-P) form. Unlike commonly used pyridoxine hydrochloride, this form of B6 is already in its active form and does not require conversion by the liver before it can be used by the body. Many people are not efficient converters of B vitamins, which is why I recommend they be taken in their active forms whenever possible.

How to prepare for a possible exposure

I would love to say that I know exactly what to do to prevent or cure Ebola. First of all, since no natural remedy is allowed to be tested, we really do not know what to expect. Second, it is actually illegal to claim anything natural can help, so I prefer to not break any laws! With that said, let me share what I have learned and all I believe can help in case of any upcoming pandemics.

I have read and listened to all I can to weed through all the hype and fear with an attempt to learn the truth. All my newsletters are filled with information, but still, we really do not know what will happen. I am pretty disgusted with the way our government is handling this, exposing us to so many people that should not be brought here. Let’s get past that, and discuss the best ways to prepare for what may or may not ever happen.

First of all, it is critical to keep your immune system as strong as possible. This will help you in all ways, but especially if you get exposed to anything as strong as this. With your immune system running at peak efficiency, you are more likely to avoid all flu’s that may ‘hit’, as well as prepare your system for something more severe.

Starting with diet, try your best to remove all simple carbohydrates, starches, gluten, GMOs, and all processed and artificial foods. This is common sense, and will help you with all aspects of your health.

As far as supplements, there are several I suggest that you add. Vitamin C and D are both critical to fight off infections, especially viruses. Ebola strips your body of Vitamin C, basically creates an immediate and intense form of scurvy! I recommend taking Catie’s Vitamin C Plus daily to keep your levels up. Bio-D-Mulsion Forte is an inexpensive way to increase your Vitamin D levels, however nothing beats sunlight! Be sure to get 20 minutes a day when you are able, and ground yourself daily as well.

For overall immune support, I suggest Bio- Immunozyme Forte . This can take the place of a multiple vitamin, with added immune boosters as well. For anyone with a compromised immune system, also add Mycofend . This contains an advanced form of beta glucan along with medicinal mushrooms.

Gut health is also essential for overall immune health. If you have digestive problems, please discuss this with me to correct this as much as possible. A quality probiotic is always a good idea, I recommend BioDoph-7 Plus for overall support.

To review:

  • Catie’s Vitamin C Plus
  • Bio-D-Mulsion Forte
  • Bio- Immunozyme Forte
  • Mycofend
  • BioDoph-7 Plus

So, let’s say that this or another potential life threatening virus does hit you area. With the open borders and flights continuing unscreened, this is becoming a real possibility!   Now, the stakes are higher and I would protect myself with everything I have. Personally, I do not believe that a vaccine can possible work as the virus mutates far too fast, and no anti-virals really exist in the medical realm. No matter what, you must keep your immune system strong, and your Vitamin C levels very high!

Colloidal silver has tested very effective in vitro and animal testing. No human testing has been allowed.

Here are some of the supplements I would recommend in this scenario:

(These high dosages are only if you believe that you were actually exposed)

  • Continue Bio-Immunozyme- 3 caps 2x/day
  • Continue MycoFend- 2 caps 2x/day
  • D-Lenolate is a wonderful antimicrobial herb- 2 caps 3 x/day
  • Liposomal C- much stronger and deeper acting, one teaspoon every hour
  • UltraVir-X- Antiviral formula, 2 caps 3x/day
  • Colloidal Silver- 1 teaspoon/ hour in water

I will do all I can to keep a large supply of all of these on hand. Also, consider a 21 day supply of healthy foods, as the fear could cause the stores to be depleted and food and water to become very scarce.

I will update this as new information is discovered. I pray none of this will ever be necessary, but I would rather be prepared and have it be unnecessary, then be caught unprepared and have to deal with the consequences.

Please call or email any specific concerns that you may have.

As a vegetarian one of my concerns is if I am getting enough nutrients in my diet.

As a modern day human, one of my major questions concerns the toxic exposures in my environments that I may, or may not, be affected by.

There’s a lot of questions I have as a health conscious person, and these aren’t questions I can get answers to from my traditional health care professionals. (Trust me, I’ve tried).

When Jeff Sherman, Master Herbalist , mentioned that he had a new device in his office that used hair samples to run a health analysis, I was interested. When I watched the video by Cell Well Being I was hooked, and I knew that I needed to do a test-run of this service.

In Jeff’s office in Thousand Oak s, he began by plucking four hairs from my head. Although I was not initially pleased, the rest of the procedure was painless and easy. My hair sample was electronically scanned and sent to a lab in Germany; then the results were sent back to us – all within 15 minutes.

While everyone’s results will be different, I thought I’d share a brief look into my own results and comprehensive report to get the gist of what this service offers.

The test revealed that I had issues and deficiencies in the following:

Omega 3.This did not surprise me because I stopped eating fish due to my western guilt over the decimated oceanic eco-system. As I want to live (period) I have recently purchased some krill oil supplements.

Amino Acids. As a vegetarian, I was not shocked by these results. I was hoping that by consuming copious amounts of beans and rice from Chipotle, and by occasionally using Brags liquid aminos, I would have gathered all of my proteins. Alas, this was not the case. I’ve since purchased amino acid supplements.

Vitamins:Vitamin A, Vitamin B6. The report gave me an “advisory” level of importance and listed foods to ingest like avocados, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and eggs. I’m confident that I can address these dietary concerns through food.

Minerals: Manganese, Magnesium, Copper, and Iron. I knew, based on symptoms I’ve had in the past, that I was in need of manganese and magnesium. But copper? Who knew? I’ve sense learned that copper is necessary for proper mental functioning (ie: who wants to avoid depression? I do!). I’ve learned that I can increase my copper intake by eating shellfish (sorry ocean) and green leafy vegetables. The report indicated that increasing my intake is a priority.

Food Additives:While I was of the mind that they’re all bad, there are some that are particularly bad FOR ME. The report gave me a list. The ones that I recognize from my label reading are sodium benzoate, glycine, and locust bean gum.

EMFs and radiation.I am an iPhone junkie. I make calls, text, take pictures, send e-mails, and shop on Amazon on my iPhone. In addition to limiting my exposures to my iPhone (I can’t even conceptualize what that would look like) the report also indicated that I could do things like eat pumpkin seeds.

Foods to Avoid:I’m not sure if this list changes over time as my diet and environmental exposures change or if this is my list for life, but here’s my “NO” list:
  • Salmon, herring, pork, kidney beans, green beans, rice, sheep milk, blueberry, sunflower, spelt.

I think I’ll only miss the blueberries, really. I'll have to read more labels to avoid sunflower oil as I've noticed the popularity of sunflower mystery blends in packaged health foods. I already knew that I needed to avoid rice due to the arsenic content. ..

When I did another test with Jeff, it indicated detectable levels of arsenic of my system. I attribute the arsenic in my system to my high levels of rice consumption. As a result of these findings, my trips to Chipotle will look a little different.

The test also addresses parasites, funguses, viruses, and chemicals.

Currently running at $65for the test and report, I think this service is well worth the time and money if you’re wondering what effects your food and environment are having on your body. It also includes a 90 day plan and a physical and emotional self-assessment.

Back to school - How to keep your family healthy!

I can remember many years ago, before I starting seriously studying nutrition, what happened every time the new school year started. My kids would be surrounded by lots of other kids, many of them already sick. They would bring all these wonderful illnesses home and generously share them with the entire family.

I used to get colds or the flu 3-4 times every year. On top of that, it would take me weeks to get better! I lived on aspirin and decongestants, needlessly suffering without any knowledge that these sicknesses were almost entirely avoidable. Now I can go years without getting sick, and when I do, it is very minor and generally gone within a few days.

There are many things you can do to increase the strength of your immune system and help your family to avoid unnecessary illnesses.

Let’s look at some simple ways to reduce your risk of developing these illnesses.

1. Clean Diet

Building immunity starts with a healthy diet! Going back to school often means low quality lunches, especially if kids are eating cafeteria food. Be sure to pack them fresh fruit and vegetables, preferably organic. In the morning, instead of feeding them cereal or other processed grains and sugar, start them off with nutritious food, like free range eggs and fresh fruit. Oatmeal can also be a healthy option, but watch what you add to it! There are several natural sweeteners that can be a great addition, along with fruit and cinnamon.

2. Take Supplements

Since children will now be indoors more, they will need more Vitamin D. Be sure you optimize yours as well!

Vitamin C is another a great supplement for strengthening your immune system! I take a Vitamin C supplement daily along with a quality whole food vitamin.

There are many supplements that offer additional support for keeping the immune system strong. Adrenal support, medicinal mushrooms, and many others can support you and your children in staying healthy and alert.

Since each person is unique, consider discussing your specific needs with a qualified natural health care practitioner.

3. Drink Plenty of Good Quality Water

Water is essential for health, as our bodies are made mostly of water. It is also the best detoxifier, helping to rid the body of toxins. Invest in a good filter, avoid tap water and most bottled waters.

4. Turn off Electronics

Electronics should be turned off up to two hours before bedtime to prevent disruption of the sleep cycle. Sleep is so important for brain health, as well as keeping the immune system strong. The body and brain both regenerate while asleep, allowing the liver and adrenal glands to stay healthy. Children need more sleep, and electronics can cause havoc to their sleep cycle.

5. Exercise

Sunlight, movement, and activity are essential to maintain good health. Take a walk after dinner, join a team for something that you enjoy, whatever will get you and your children to be active and out of the house.

A few simple changes can dramatically improve the health of your entire family. Feel free to contact me for any specific recommendations that you may need.
